Scarlett Stein, a senior and a standout softball player at Jeannette (Pa.) High School, died on Wednesday after complications from a heart attack. She was 17.

A Facebook page titled “Scarlet’s Prayer Warriors” was started Sunday night, with hundreds of people offering thoughts and prayers for Stein and her family. According to the page, Stein had a heart attack last Tuesday, Dec. 6. She was revived but had remained in critical condition.

Earlier last week, Stein had signed her letter of intent to play softball at Penn State New Kensington.

The story from the PSU Kensington website announcing the signing has since been taken down.

In May, Stein was featured as a “Westmoreland Athlete of the Week” on TribLIVE.com. The Q&A describes how Stein helped lift her team to the postseason last season, throwing a one-hitter in an 11-0 win over Geibel Catholic (Connellsville) on May 9.

“I felt from the first inning it was going to be good,” Stein told TribLIVE. “I can tell my pitches are all working. I know if I have a good game it reflects on the team.”

On social media, there has been an outpouring of support for Stein’s family and the Jeannette community.

A “Scarlet’s Warriors” GoFundMe page has also been set up and has raised over $3,000 for Stein’s family.
